It’s my 1 year blog-iversary!!

Hello all,

Today is officially 1 year since i posted my very first blog post, i know what your all thinking ‘ooh valentines day how cute’ no not really!! i didn’t have a date last valentines and i don’t have one now  (check out my top 20 valentines day film’s) which means another Rosé fuelled movie night in with my sister (best night ever).

I digress, so i have been blogging for a year now and here is what I’ve learnt so far:

  1. Consistency is key   –  Consistently updating a blog can be extremely time consuming and tedious, i barely have time to update my i-phone to the latest version, but being consistent is the only way you will see results. As we all know, life happens, and sometimes you just don’t have time.
  2. Confidence is also key  –  Trying to make an entertainment based blog successful has its challenges, as do many other types of blogs. In comparison to a fashion and/or lifestyle blog, promotional opportunities can be hard to come by, but when they do come you must be confident. The first interview i did was with film director Kai Barry and actress Noémie Merlant for their film Newcomer (2015). I was so excited when i was offered the opportunity to interview them, i was so nervous when i arrived and terrified that they knew it, luckily they where so nice and the interview was a breeze (Kinda, i was still sweating buckets).
  3. Never give up – Im almost 100% sure that every blogger has thought about giving up at least once (i know i have, more than once). Although my blog doesn’t get as much traffic as i’d like, looking back at the views just six months ago and now, there is a huge difference and that alone is enough to keep going. I genuinely love film and fashion and i genuinely love talking about it.This is just the begging!
  4. Be yourself  –  When i first started Girl About Film i really wanted it to be anonymous, but i soon realised that most successful blogs have more of a personal touch to it. Personally, i’m still working on this part. The idea of putting myself out there is quiet daunting but i understand how crucial it can be when creating a successful blog. I am thinking to maybe do interview videos, a vlog and/or OOTD pics!? what do you guys think?
  5. Social media is important  –  How else will people find your amazing blog? Social media is important if you want more people reading your posts. Social media is how most of us get information these days from news to film reviews and fashion tips. I see social media as a sort of interactive billboard, you need to make sure that as many people as possible will see your blog post.
  6. Reference! reference! reference!  –  When i first started blogging, i barely ever referenced pictures or information (i know, its bad). It can be tedious but you must remember to give credit where its due. You wouldn’t want someone using your picture/post/video without stating where they got it.
  7. You don’t always have to say yes  –  When you start getting promotional requests it can be really exciting, but always remember what your blog is about. I have been approached by brands that don’t fit Girl About Film and i have had to decline (yes, even when they offer money) because theres nothing worst than being a sell out to your own brand

About Me

So i guess it’s time i let you know a bit about me: My name is Kimberley-Jade, i am 24 years old and i live in London, England. As you can tell, i am a huge film buff and i love everything that goes with it from fashion to re-makes. I currently work full time but i also pride myself on being a full-time film connoisseur.

Film: Cheesy rom-coms and anything Tarantino are my favourite types of films, I’ve currently been re-watching True Romance (1993)

TV: I love a good teen show, anything with great fashion and good looking people and i love a good dark comedy like orange is the new black (2013)

Fashion: One of my favourite designers is Elie Saab, his dresses are just so dreamy and romantical. I love shows like Reign, Sex and The City and Gossip Girl (obviously) for fashion inspiration.

my top 20 valetines day films

my top 20 valentines day films

Happy Valentine’s day all! It may be a way for businesses to pump extra money out of us  but it can still be super romantic, even if that romance isn’t really real because your not really Rachel McAdams kissing Ryan Gosling in the rain! But that is besides the point, romance is romance and here are my top 20, romance-daydream-inducing, valentines day films.

  1. Think like a man (2012)  –  Based on the Steve Harvey’s book ‘Act like a lady, Think like a man’ (2009) the film has got everything you’d expect to see from a good rom-com.  think like a man gif(GIF via Think Like a Man)

MEREDITH MARKWORTH-POLLACK reign costume designer

How did you become a costume designer?

I studied Film at UCSB (University of California, Santa Barbara) and it was there that I really began to grasp the idea of what a costume designer was. I always had a strong interest in fashion and came from a creative family. When I realized I could combine this interest with my passion for film it made perfect sense. After school I moved to New York City and started interning in the costume department on film productions. I worked my way up to assisting and then designing on my own.

How did you prepare before you started working on Reign?

When I got the job to design the Reign pilot I had very little time before I had to fly to Ireland and start working- like 2 days! So I quickly read up on the historical dress of the period and then did my own inspirational research to figure out how I was going to blur the lines a bit between the historical dress and contemporizing elements to make it fit the look of what the creators and producers wanted. After the show got picked up I had a bit more prep time- about three weeks so I was able to do proper research and create look books for each character, background, etc.

How would you describe a typical work day?

A typical work day usually starts on set around 7 or 8 in the morning. I start on set to help establish the look of a character. We have a team that dresses the actors and keeps track of continuity on set but it’s always a good idea to be there in case any issues come up. I then head to the office and usually arrive around 9 am. First I check in with the sewing room because they start at 7:30 and usually have questions for me by the time I arrive. I then have a little ‘pow wow’ with our shopper and go over her shopping list for the day. Then I sit down with my assistant designer and supervisor and we discuss our plans for the day, time line’s, what we’re working on etc. The rest of the day is usually spent in meetings, fittings with actors, and shopping.

What advice would you give an aspiring costume designer?

My advice for aspiring designers is to learn the skills and intern/volunteer when you can. If you are a student I recommend taking sewing or cutting classes- even learning basic sewing skills will help you in your career. While it’s getting harder and harder to intern on films or TV shows there are still local theatre companies that will appreciate your time, and it’s a great way to get your feet wet. The road to becoming a costume designer is long and you have to put in the time learning and apprenticing. It’s not going to happen overnight. You really should value your time assisting and learning especially if you’re working for someone respected in the business.

What advice would you give your younger self?

I would have told my younger self to practice more of my technical skills like sewing, cutting, and illustrating! These are all very strong tools for a costume designer.

What do you love about your job?

I love my job so much and I never take that for granted. I feel incredibly fortunate to be where I am in my career and on a show that is so nurturing and productive to my creative spirit. What I love most is the process in which my team all works together to produce these beautiful costumes. We have so many kind and talented people working with us and it is truly a special thing.

How do you stay motivated?

It’s easy to get burnt out in TV when the hours are quite gruelling and the seasons go on for a while. I find that watching films and new TV shows as well as checking out exhibits and occasionally dabbling in the fashion world keep me motivated. Travel also helps… everything is easier to digest with perspective.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

Right now I don’t have much free time but when I do it’s spent with my baby!
